Why Corten Steel

Material Built to
Last Centuries.

Corten steel -- also known as weathering steel -- develops a rich, protective rust patina that shields the core metal from corrosion, eliminating the need for painting or coating while growing more beautiful with age.

Material
  • Self-Protecting Patina

The natural oxidation layer acts as a permanent barrier against further corrosion -- no paint, no maintenance, no fading.

  • Extreme Durability

Tensile strength exceeding 485 MPa -- resistant to wind, rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and UV exposure in any climate.

  • Living Aesthetic

The warm amber-to-deep-brown tones deepen over time, ensuring your sculpture becomes richer and more distinctive with each passing year.

Design
  • Fully Custom Sizing

From intimate garden pieces at 1m to monumental public installations exceeding 10m -- every dimension is engineered to your specification.

  • 3D Concept Modelling

Our design team produces detailed CAD renders and physical maquettes before fabrication begins, so you approve every curve and proportion.

  • Architectural Integration

Sculptures are designed in dialogue with their environment -- whether a corporate plaza, private garden, or gallery interior.

FAQ

Common Questions
Answered.

Buying a large custom sculpture is a significant investment. We've answered the questions our international clients ask most frequently before placing an order.

Ask a Question
How long does it take to develop the Corten patina?
In most climates, Corten steel begins developing its characteristic amber-rust patina within 6-18 months of outdoor exposure. The patina stabilises into a dense, protective layer after 2-3 years. Humid coastal environments accelerate the process; arid climates may take slightly longer. The result is the same: a rich, warm surface that protects the steel beneath for decades.
Will Corten steel stain my patio, driveway, or concrete base?
During the initial patina formation phase (typically the first 1-2 seasons), run-off water can carry rust-coloured tannins that may temporarily stain light-coloured surfaces beneath. We recommend placing sculptures on a gravel bed, dark stone, or raised plinth to allow drainage. Once the patina stabilises, run-off reduces dramatically. We provide detailed installation guidelines with every order.
Can I specify a custom size, pose, or design?
Absolutely. Every YouFine sculpture is made to order. You can select any sculpture from our catalogue and request modifications to size, pose, finish, or base design. We also accept fully bespoke commissions -- simply describe your vision, share reference images, or sketch your idea, and our design team will produce 3D renders for your approval before fabrication begins.
How is the sculpture shipped internationally? What are the risks?
Sculptures are professionally crated in custom-built wooden frames with foam padding and moisture-barrier wrapping. We ship via sea freight (FCL or LCL depending on size) to major ports worldwide, with full export documentation including CO, packing list, and commercial invoice. We have shipped to the USA, UK, Australia, Germany, France, Canada, and 20+ other countries without incident. Marine insurance is available and recommended for high-value pieces.
What is the typical lead time from order to delivery?
Production typically takes 30-60 days depending on complexity and size. Sea freight to Europe or North America adds 25-45 days. In total, most clients receive their sculpture within 60-90 days of deposit payment. We provide a firm production schedule at the time of order, and you will receive progress photos every 1-2 weeks throughout fabrication.
How do I pay? Is it safe to pay a Chinese manufacturer?
We accept T/T (bank transfer) with a standard split of 30% deposit to begin production and 70% balance before shipment. We never request full payment upfront. Before the balance is due, we provide a full photo and video inspection of the completed sculpture. YouFine has been operating for 40 years with thousands of satisfied international clients -- our track record and client references speak for themselves. We are happy to provide references from past buyers in your region.
Does Corten steel require any maintenance?
Once the patina has fully stabilised (typically after 2-3 years), Corten steel requires virtually no maintenance. Occasional rinsing with clean water to remove bird droppings or debris is sufficient. No painting, sealing, or anti-rust treatment is needed. For indoor installations or environments where staining is a concern, we can apply a clear lacquer coating to arrest the patina at any stage -- simply specify this preference when ordering.
