Han (He in English) Statue is one of the more controversial stainless steel artworks in recent years. The original work sits in front of the cultural center on the pier’s edge. It shows a man sitting on a rock in a mermaid posture, which is very similar to another classic bronze sculpture – The Little Mermaid.
Danish-Norwegian artist duo Elmgreen and Dragset present their work as “Brothers of the Little Mermaid”. The traditional image of a mermaid is half human, half fish tail, but this polished stainless steel sculpture is clearly a male, with the lower half being human legs. Han, like his sister (The Little Mermaid), sits on a rock and gazes out to sea, while its shiny surface reflects its surroundings, including the watching crowd.

The artists wanted to challenge the conventions of depicting masculinity in our time. Contrary to the traditional nude, muscular, brave male statue, the sculptor created a fragile, childlike male figure without a heroic aura, and expressed it in the form of a stainless steel sculpture.
