Why Corten Steel

A Distinctive Material.
A Lasting Impression.

Warm tones, expressive surfaces, and a strong architectural presence. Corten weathering steel offers a distinctive choice for sculpture when the material, detailing, and installation site are carefully considered.

Material Character

  • An Evolving Patina

With suitable exposure to alternating wet and dry conditions, weathering steel can develop an oxide layer that slows further corrosion. Its color and texture vary with the local environment.

  • Durability Through Design

Performance depends on the specified steel grade, thickness, drainage, and structural design--not appearance alone. These factors should be reviewed against the sculpture's scale and site conditions.

  • A Naturally Textured Finish

Earthy orange and brown tones bring warmth to contemporary landscapes. The finish continues to change, so natural variation should be expected rather than a permanently uniform color.

Design Flexibility

  • Proportions for Your Space

Shape and dimensions can be developed around your garden, courtyard, or public space, subject to fabrication feasibility, transport access, and installation requirements.

  • Clarity Before Fabrication

Sketches, renderings, and 3D models help refine the concept and communicate proportions. The design deliverables and approval stages are agreed for each commission.

  • Considered Site Integration

Placement, drainage, anchoring, and nearby paving all influence the result. Early planning helps manage runoff staining and ensures the sculpture belongs within its surroundings.

YouFine Expertise

  • 40 Years in Sculpture

YouFine brings 40 years of experience in sculpture production to each conversation, with attention to design, workmanship, and the specific requirements of your chosen material.

  • Production You Can Follow

Regular photographs and videos keep you informed during fabrication. Proposed changes are reviewed for feasibility, cost, and schedule before they are confirmed.

Material & Assembly Planning

Confirm the steel specification, plate thickness, joining approach, and support details against the approved design. Large installations may require project-specific structural review.

Form & Surface Review

Review proportions, visible joints, edges, and the intended finish at agreed milestones. Photographs help communicate progress, while natural patina variation remains part of the material.

Delivery & Site Readiness

Plan lifting access, packing, foundations, and anchoring before dispatch. Agree who will handle installation and how runoff will be managed around the finished sculpture.

Your Commission

A Clear Path from Idea to Production.

  1. Design Consultation

Share your inspiration, approximate dimensions, budget, and site photographs. We discuss your goals and whether Corten steel is an appropriate starting point.

  2. Concept Development

Refine the idea through agreed sketches, renderings, or 3D models. Review proportions, surface expectations, and installation considerations before approving the design.

  3. Production & Updates

Fabrication begins after the specification and commercial terms are confirmed. Receive regular photo and video updates, with changes assessed before implementation.

  4. Review & Dispatch

FAQ

Common Questions
Answered.

Buying a large custom sculpture is a significant investment. We've answered the questions our international clients ask most frequently before placing an order.

Ask a Question
How long does it take to develop the Corten patina?
In most climates, Corten steel begins developing its characteristic amber-rust patina within 6-18 months of outdoor exposure. The patina stabilises into a dense, protective layer after 2-3 years. Humid coastal environments accelerate the process; arid climates may take slightly longer. The result is the same: a rich, warm surface that protects the steel beneath for decades.
Will Corten steel stain my patio, driveway, or concrete base?
During the initial patina formation phase (typically the first 1-2 seasons), run-off water can carry rust-coloured tannins that may temporarily stain light-coloured surfaces beneath. We recommend placing sculptures on a gravel bed, dark stone, or raised plinth to allow drainage. Once the patina stabilises, run-off reduces dramatically. We provide detailed installation guidelines with every order.
Can I specify a custom size, pose, or design?
Absolutely. Every YouFine sculpture is made to order. You can select any sculpture from our catalogue and request modifications to size, pose, finish, or base design. We also accept fully bespoke commissions -- simply describe your vision, share reference images, or sketch your idea, and our design team will produce 3D renders for your approval before fabrication begins.
How is the sculpture shipped internationally? What are the risks?
Sculptures are professionally crated in custom-built wooden frames with foam padding and moisture-barrier wrapping. We ship via sea freight (FCL or LCL depending on size) to major ports worldwide, with full export documentation including CO, packing list, and commercial invoice. We have shipped to the USA, UK, Australia, Germany, France, Canada, and 20+ other countries without incident. Marine insurance is available and recommended for high-value pieces.
What is the typical lead time from order to delivery?
Production typically takes 30-60 days depending on complexity and size. Sea freight to Europe or North America adds 25-45 days. In total, most clients receive their sculpture within 60-90 days of deposit payment. We provide a firm production schedule at the time of order, and you will receive progress photos every 1-2 weeks throughout fabrication.
How do I pay? Is it safe to pay a Chinese manufacturer?
We accept T/T (bank transfer) with a standard split of 30% deposit to begin production and 70% balance before shipment. We never request full payment upfront. Before the balance is due, we provide a full photo and video inspection of the completed sculpture. YouFine has been operating for 40 years with thousands of satisfied international clients -- our track record and client references speak for themselves. We are happy to provide references from past buyers in your region.
Does Corten steel require any maintenance?
Once the patina has fully stabilised (typically after 2-3 years), Corten steel requires virtually no maintenance. Occasional rinsing with clean water to remove bird droppings or debris is sufficient. No painting, sealing, or anti-rust treatment is needed. For indoor installations or environments where staining is a concern, we can apply a clear lacquer coating to arrest the patina at any stage -- simply specify this preference when ordering.
